EPW to Excel converter

Opening an EnergyPlus EPW directly in Excel gives 8,760 rows of unlabelled numbers under eight header lines. This converter writes a proper workbook instead: an Hourly sheet with named columns, units and real Excel date-times, a Monthly sheet with temperatures, humidity, solar, wind, degree-days and rain, and a Location sheet with the station details and the original header.

What is in the workbook

What the CSV contains

A timestamp column at the start of each hour in local standard time (the EPW counts hours 1 to 24, each ending at that hour), the original year, month, day and hour, then the weather fields with their units in the header. Missing-value codes such as 99.9 or 9999 become empty cells, so averages and charts are not thrown off. Every one of the 8,760 rows comes through with named columns: dry-bulb and dew point temperature, relative humidity, station pressure, global, direct-normal and diffuse-horizontal solar radiation, wind speed and direction, and the remaining standard EPW fields.

Need to go the other way?

Have your own measurements from a weather station, a building sensor or a logger? The CSV to EPW tool turns them into an EnergyPlus weather file: your readings replace the hours they cover in an actual-year file for the same site and year, and every other hour and field is filled in, so the EPW is complete. For many locations, the batch tool takes a CSV of coordinates and generates one EPW per row; to shape an existing EPW, use the EPW editor.

Frequently asked questions

How do I open an EnergyPlus EPW file in Excel?

Drop the EPW on this page and download the .xlsx: every column is named with its unit, dates are real Excel date-times, and a monthly summary sheet is included. Excel can also open the raw EPW as text, but it shows unlabelled numbers under eight header lines.

Which fields are included in the CSV?

All 8,760 hourly rows with labelled columns: dry-bulb and dew point temperature, relative humidity, atmospheric pressure, global, direct and diffuse solar radiation, wind speed and direction, and the other standard EPW fields.

Can I get the EPW in °F and mph?

Yes. Choose IP units and temperatures come out in °F, wind in mph, pressure in inHg, solar radiation in Btu/ft² and precipitation in inches.

Does exporting to CSV change the data?

No. The CSV holds the same hourly values as the EPW with headers added; only missing-value codes become empty cells, and IP units are converted if you choose them. Nothing is resampled.
